Spanish artist José Cosme exhibits at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Bogota
About the artist José Cosme: Was born in Valencia (Spain) in 1968. He is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, theologian and Doctor of Fine Arts. Director of the Art and Technology Chair at the Catholic University of Valencia (UCV). He is a member of the foundational board of the ISEA, the Instituto Superior de Estudios Artísticos de la Generalitat Valenciana. He is also a member of the Ilustre del Colegio de Doctores de Bellas Artes de Valencia, is an honorary academic of the International Academy of Sciences, Technology, Education and Humanities. Colombia receives for the first time the Spanish artist who presents himself with a conceptual work to reflect on the meaning of life. It will be on display from March 15th to May 5th in halls 1 and 2 of the MAC.
‘El todo y la nada’ is the name of the conceptual work that artist José Cosme will present at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Bogotá, Uniminuto’s Cultural Entity. The exhibition will be open for public viewing from March 15 to May 5 and is sponsored by the Arts Connection Foundation.
This is the first time that the Spanish artist José Cosme’s work has been exhibited in Colombia and for the occasion he has decided to present a new work that invites to reflection on the meaning of life, the future of the human being and its links with the universe. “José Cosme is eagerly searching for that world of the unexplored areas of the spirit, to give new expressions to old affairs or to focus the eyes of intelligence and sensitivity on transcendental questions inherent to the soul,” said the renowned critic and art curator Rosa Ulpiano.
Cosme’s proposal consists of 6 installations that invite the spectator to rethink and reconstruct themselves from observation and the generation of meanings in order to establish intense and fruitful relationships in the cultural field. It is a multidisciplinary work composed of photographs, painting, video art and pieces such as sacks or paint pots which interact with each other building with their own language a universe of ‘conceptual baroque’, starting from a minimalist and ‘povera’ image.
That is why José Cosme’s installations try to “re-create light as an allegory of the soul, to give it a new interpretation, to represent it in a different way. Appropriating a series of gadgets and objects whose symbolism can lead us either by banal analysis or by the ways of the spirit as in any Art, “Rosa Ulpiano said.
For the art critic “his works evoke everything from the Flame of Living Love of St. John of the Cross to a mystical discussion about the unknown of Samuel Becket’s Waiting for Godot: The footprint, the shoe, the brain, light bulbs or a series of cubes, all this imagery would also be used in theatre, cinema, poetry or the plastic arts and which question us about human existence, about the uncertain and the mysterious. Objects that are now reappropriate by the artist for his own poetics.”
